Brunswick County was the 29th fastest growing county in the country. The sprawling county squeezed between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC, saw its 'population jump 5.4% between July 2004 and July 2005. David Sandifer, Chairman of the Brunswick County Commisioners, said he wasn't suprised to see his county on the list. "I'm suprised it wasn't higher," he said, jokingly. "I guess we're realizing that everybody else now realizes what a jewel this is where we live."

Sandifer credited Brunswick's varied neighborhoods, from beach towns to golf course communities, and slower pace of life for helping draw people. And with plenty of space still left to grow, he said he doesn't expect the influx of new residents to slow down anytime soon. "If anything, I think there could be an increase, especially if you factor in the news of the new port," he said, referring to the state port's proposed International Terminal near Southport.
